Well, the festivities are over and we’re off the starting line for another year.
Knowing how hard you all work and what a tough job caring for troubled kids can be, I thought I’d make this first blog post about that…
Why your first job this year is you!
Because we are caring people – if we weren’t, we wouldn’t be in the job – we have a tendency to neglect ourselves.
I know this from bitter personal experience.
So, if we’re to make this year a success, we must address this issue. But how can we make time for ourselves when everything and everyone else is so demanding?
Over the last couple of years I’ve written quite a bit on self-care.
I’ve now pulled this thinking together into one short e-Book (it’s about 5500 words long).
Whatever your role…
- Social worker
- Foster carer
- Youth justice worker
- Residential care officer
- Kinship carer
- Mental health worker
- Youth Work
- (and anyone I’ve missed!) :0)
…your own welfare is key to being able to do a good job for the kids you serve.
Let me say that again – your own welfare is key to being able to do a good job for the kids you serve.
Not only that, but your team or other colleagues will suffer if you can’t keep working to your full potential.
When we look after ourselves, everybody wins!

Looking After No.1
To make it easier for you, I’ve drawn together my writing on this subject (and some new stuff) into one place – an e-Book called, “Looking After No.1 – Self-Care For People Working With Troubled Children.”
Whether you work with babies, younger children or teenagers, this book has something to offer.
It explains why self-care is important and some very practical ways you can begin doing a better job of looking after yourself – No.1!
[callout]“…a very easy to read book with some top tips… Jonny links his own experience with an openness and honesty that gives his ideas an authenticity that resonates strongly and leaves you reflecting on your own experience… A top read from a top practitioner.” Keith Towler – former Children’s Commissioner[/callout]

Off to a flying start…
Like me, you’re probably already feeling the pressure starting to mount as you start back at work.
So, why not invest the princely sum of £2.97 and get yourself a little gem of a read that’ll help you start making some changes?
The most challenging child or young person you’re helping right now, will be better helped if you look after yourself first.
Why wait? Start as you mean to go on. Take a practical step towards doing a better job. And feel better doing it!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Here’s wishing you all a Happy New Year and all of life’s best for a successful and contented 2016. Go for it!
P.S. You can read other (unedited) reviews of the e-book – here.
